J&M Myth-busters Part Two: "A DIY Wedding Will Save Me A Lot Of Money."

December 7, 2017

Did you know that the "M" in J&M Entertainment stands for Myth-buster?!

Okay, so maybe that is not what the "M" stands for, but that did not stop us from taking on the task of de-bunking wedding myths that often creep into the ears of couples while planning their wedding. Last week we started our new series specifically tailored to de-bunking some of the most common wedding myths, and this week we are going to be focusing on the much talked about DIY wedding.

As usual, let's start at the beginning. According to *Wikipedia* it was not until the 19th century that couples started to marry for love (previously it was based on a bride's economic worth... how romantic!). But the reason for the wedding is not the only thing that has changed since the 19th century. These once small celebrations that took place in the church's basement or parents' home has now become a lavish event that the average couple spends $30,000+ on. So it is no surprise that couples started taking some of the wedding tasks into their own hands to save money where they could.

However, there is a significant amount of factors that couples often underestimate when embarking on the DIY journey, the 1st being that your wedding is most likely the biggest event you have (and ever will) plan and coordinate. Unless you are involved in the industry and are immersed in weddings every week, it is hard to fathom all of the minuet details that create your special day. The second factor is that any wedding DIY projects you are undertaking are being purchased at retail price, where professionals get it at wholesale price. This means that instead of spending the money on the professional, you are spending money on the product. There are also other factors to consider like time, if DIY projects are allowed in your venue (like food that you make, real vs. fake flowers, etc.), and not having the man-power to handle last minute crisis situations the day of your wedding.

Now that we have laid the groundwork, it is time for the juicy stuff!

A DIY WEDDING DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN YOU WILL SAVE MONEY.

According to Our Everyday Life, "Rarely does DIY equal cheap wedding. It's there for you to cut costs or cut corners, but really it's a massive undertaking and could end up costing you the same." The reality is that there will always be a spot in the wedding industry for DIY weddings, and there is nothing wrong with that! Your wedding and the planning process is yours. While entertainment and the venue are the most important elements of one couple's wedding, flowers and food is the number one priority for another couple. Our advice is to look at the top three wedding services that you and your fiance want for your wedding and have those done by the wedding professionals. Then any of the services that are lower on your list of priorities can be discussed as a DIY project. This can help potentially save some money, and the services that are truly your priority can be handled by the best in the business!
