6 Musts When You Get Engaged

October 3, 2017

Now that we have gone over what NOT to do when you get engaged (see previous blog post), let's go over what you SHOULD do!

#1: Celebrate!

You are engaged!! Before all of the wedding planning begins, take some time to just soak in all of the newly engaged bliss. That could mean an engagement shoot, celebration party with family and friends, or partaking in some classic engagement cliches... it is up to you! Regardless of how you choose to celebrate, make sure to make some fun and intimate memories with your new fiance before the wedding planning begins.

#2: Dream Up Your Wedding Vision

During the celebration of your engagement, you probably spent some time daydreaming of your wedding (and let's be honest, you probably have been for a while!). Taking the time to see what you like before meeting with and booking vendors is crucial. Not only will this help you find vendors who specialize in the vision you are creating, but it will also give vendors an insight into your vision and how to make it a reality.

#3: Pick Your Top Three Wedding Services

One of the most overlooked parts of wedding planning is prioritizing. This is incredibly important because it allows you to see what aspects of the wedding are most important to each of you and decide which services get priority in the budget. Prioritizing different services also is a key factor in what makes one wedding different from the next. Our advice is to write down your top three wedding services (i.e. venue, photography, dress, entertainment, cake, etc.) and create the budget around that.

#4: Select A Season

It is important to start with a season, and not a specific date. When couples start planning their wedding and get attached to a certain date, it can often be an obstacle on the road to their dream wedding. By picking a season and keeping your mind open to different dates, you will not likely run into: 1) Your dream venue being booked solid on that day and having to find a different location, 2) The perfect vendor already reserved with a different couple, 3) Other road blocks with schedules of family and close friends. Overall, picking a season over date will lead to availability, flexibility, and smooth planning.

#5: Create A Ballpark Idea Of The Details

Another step to tackle before officially booking any of your wedding vendors or services is to create an initial idea of the details. Some of the information your vendors will need are: the amount of guests, wedding budget, and geographical location. Take some time to sit down with your fiance and close family members to discuss an initial rough draft of the guest list, how many (if any) will be contributing to the budget, and what city (or cities) you are thinking of having your wedding at.

#6: Attend A Bridal Show

Bridal shows are incredible for all couples planning their wedding. Aside from wedding prizes, attending fashion shows, getting wedding inspiration from the amazing booths, and getting one-on-one time with the pros, you also get to meet with all of the talented and creative vendors in your area in a matter of hours! Talk about saving time and keeping your days off open! P.S. Creating a new e-mail for all of your wedding contacts that you meet at the bridal show is a must because it makes sure your main e-mail stays clean, keeps track of what needs to be done, and organizes all of your wedding correspondence.
